The elusive quail egg…

Quail were my 29th birthday gift this past year. I brought home 30 hatched quail, and the seller generously included 4 dozen fertilized eggs for me to try to incubate.

The eggs above are from those 4 dozen.

The quail came home in early November 2018. Here we are, February 2019, and still, no quail eggs.

Of course, I do expect a fair amount of the delay in their production is due to the weather- they require a certain number of hours of light everyday for the hormone cascade to correctly tell them to lay an egg.

However, I sing over them daily..”Good morning..did anyone decide to lay an egg today…?” Look around, look around, make sure to check every possible nook and cranny of their area…No. Yet again. Maybe tomorrow.

I fully expect to squeal with delight the first time they do lay. And eventually, with keeping 50-60 females, I know eventually I will be up to my ears in quail eggs.

But for now..it remains the next great quail adventure. We have hatched them (which I LOVE), eaten them (which was definitely an experience) and next, I am so eager to daily collect their sweet tiny eggs.

Until then, I will continue to sing over them every day, because they really are such a valuable and joyful addition to our home – just being themselves, regardless of bringing anything (literally) to the table.

Note- this bird nest was found on our property, and if you look closely, you will notice Logan’s hair is a substantial material this bird collected and used.
