Welcome, Ducks!

Newest Homestead addition- ducklings!

We have been enjoying noticing the differences between ducks and chickens, just in these first few weeks already.

Coming up on a year ago, Farmer Jim and I did food sensitivity testing.

My several years worth of “mystery illness” may one day get it’s own post, but for now, lets just say we both had our suspicions that we were consistently eating foods that were contributing more to inflammation than to our health. Confirmed by the test, one of my top results was chicken eggs.

A few months later we said “Welcome” to the quail, and now are adding ducks to the flock. The medical confirmation of the chicken egg sensitivity was daunting at first, but it has evolved to be the most delightful poultry version of a win-win, because I love tending to my birds every day and the variety of eggs in our diet will be so helpful.

Ducks lay all throughout the winter, which I am thrilled to experience!

Our first winter with chickens, I didn’t freeze up enough eggs to pull from when they lay less with the fewer hours of daylight, so we ended up buying a dozen once or twice…which is an emotional blow when you have a flock of freeloaders at home.

Ducks however, lay before the sun even comes up, so they are less affected by photoperiod like quail and chickens are. This trait is what enables them to lay steadily all year long!

I have a nonstop love for variety, and am thankful that ducks are now included in the little flock at our home.
