Surprise Stash

We occasionally find little surprise stashes of eggs- once was to the tune of 27 total!

Based on the lovely shade of tan of this jackpot, I suspect one hen in particular has found a special hiding spot for her eggs- in the horse barn!

The girls have several hiding spots in the larger side of their barn, and do even extend into the horse barn. Of course, they have a lovely row of nesting boxes, that someone may lay an egg in perhaps once a week (typically all in the same box).

They are so funny. We love the adventure of having chickens, and the joy and beauty they add to our home every day- in the form of clucks and cheepcheeps, their gorgeous feathers that I collect and save for crafts, and of course the eggs. Chickens are such an easy and wonderful addition to our attempts to be more self-sufficient, slower paced, and connected to nature.

In other chicken news- early Spring in Cedar Hill has provided some lovely days to allow Violet and Sweet Pea some outdoors time.

They get to stretch their legs in a sectioned off area of the outdoor chicken coop- happy as can be doing chicken things such as sunbathing and exploring.

Of course, their first time out there everyone (including Logan) felt the need to come around and check them out.

We have found this method of “outdoors time” during the day, but still sleeping in the brooding box at night- to be a great transitional process.

The outdoors time offers time for everyone to get somewhat acclimated to each other, without the hens being able to peck them/keep them from food and water- which has happened in the past when we directly introduced new girls to the full flock without this transitional time.

We all are thankful for the sunny days, which have broken up the heaps of rain we have been getting recently, but both are sure signs of Spring on it’s way!
